Hmmm

I know I should feel good about people reading my blog - never mind that no one seems to feel it necessary to leave a note for me, whatsoever - but I can never keep myself from being surprised whenever someone tells me, "I read your blog." Not that I'm 'maintaining' this for my personal viewing - because seriously, I can write a diary instead, can't I? - but it's really unexpected whenever a random comment is given about cookiecutter caricature. It's odd. Feels odd.

Although I must say I'm pleased, truly. Thanks, random lurkers - since I've been given enough evidence to believe in your existence, somewhere, out there.

Things I've been up to lately are best left up to the imagination of people who wish to imagine. Let's just say I've recently been sleeping eight hours a night, eating only two meals a day out of sheer lack of appetite - oh yes, I haven't been getting a decent dose of Arashi either, because them fansubbers ain't feeling very industrious right now. N says I have dark circles under my eyes - this, despite the fact that I've been oversleeping, the fact that I haven't been getting any studying done. Good God.

Bah. Rant. Rant. I haven't written in quite a while, have I? I shall do my best to rant about more interesting matters other than my life, the next time.

Revival

'Tis been a long time since my last sojourn to the Blogosphere. It's also been a long time since the last time I finished a book, a long time since I watched an anime series. In sum, things have changed. Not for the better, it seems. I'm almost part of that sector in society the Japanese like to call NEET - not in Education, Employment, or Training. I mean, I study, but HUH. We're not talking about technicalities here.

More changes to start next week! Can you believe I actually got accepted into an Internship Program? The Office is almost two hours away from where I live, but who cares?! I get to work in Makati, with smart people, for an interesting agency - I'm sure I'll adore it eventually. Sir B, who interviewed me, seemed amused by my 'innocence'. Like how I came knocking at the door of the Office, looking for an Internship, and barely any compensation. What is BORED.

Am currently juggling Arashi-ness. Currently watching Yamada Taro Monogatari and Kisarazu Cat's Eye. Let me honestly say that no matter how much I admire Sho-san, watching his acting pains me. It just isn't... there. Whatever it is actors need to be able to act well, it's not there. But since I vowed to NOT talk about Arashi here, I won't. Visit my Arashi site - if very bored, and only IF very bored - at arasukishi.livejournal.com.

That's all for now.

unproductive vacations

My past five summers have always involved anime, ten-hour TV marathons, the Sims and Her Interactive, and the occasional light novel - often of the romcom kind. This summer has not been any different. Fine. I finally got my degree, returned to Bohol for the first time in two years, turned 20, and successfully survived organizing an UPCAT review program, but in the end this summer's still been unproductive. The Patriot, which I'd been meaning to watch for more than a year now, is still in our DVD shelf, untouched. I have yet to finish our copy of Poe's shorts collection. The only improvement is that at least I'm not sleeping in for more than ten hours every day now. On the downside, I haven't finished my editing assignment for the college yearbook yet - and that's a month overdue. Oh, and I have 39 minors to watch over until August.

Point is, I'm back online.

fizzle, sputter - extinction

It's officially 2011~

I knew it the moment a shower of sparks popped out barely 500 meters to my direct right, shocking me for a moment, our neighbors' screams doing nothing to calm me down. At that time, I had been the only one left awake in our house. 11-ish, my father suddenly complained that he was feeling sleepy, and went off to take a 'nap' in the nearest unoccupied bedroom. Rosaline, after two straight evenings of standing guard during her grandmother's funeral, was barely awake while we were washing the evening's dishes. Manang Em rushed to her hometown earlier, presumably to watch Miss Gay Bobuntugan 2010, leaving us three inexperienced chefs to fend for ourselves the night before New Year's. And my mother, of course, is pining a continent and a half away, my only contact with her having been Facebook chat. Pathetic holiday, altogether. I suppose it sounds blasphemous, but I really don't see much in Christmas anymore. I'm sorry, dear Jesus, but seriously... you weren't born in December, were you?

Scared that a firecracker might suddenly swoop into the house and set my mother's prized curtains on fire, I closed all the windows I could reach, and even turned off all the lights. I even considered not waking my father up, even though it's his habit to make a racket (I kid you not) while welcoming a fresh year. And for some time, I actually thought I would spend the turn of the year alone, sitting in front of my laptop, waiting for my latest Torrent attempt to load. But then my father woke up, grabbed a red shirt, and started pounding on the car horn to make noise without his highly detested pyrotechnics.

I suppose, in the end, you can't escape merrymaking, whatever mood you're in.

Undas 2010

As I've mentioned in my previous post, I have no idea how to flip pictures like this. In any case, this is a picture of me taken just a few moments ago, sitting on top of two connected beds in Rm6 of the UP Alumni Hostel. Basically, I'm here because my dorm doesn't open until tomorrow, and I have to race to my college early so my thesis partner (Sunshine, who didn't tell me she had suffered from dengue over the sembreak) and me can get a decent adviser. And yeah, I'm scared as hell, so scared I'm plotting possible attack maneuvers vs both live invaders of my privacy and spirit fiends. Most of them involving my rather heavy water bottle and screaming at the top of my lungs.

Shame though, 'cause as I was preparing for my undeniably long evening, the idea for a story came to me. Shame 'cause it's a horror story, of all things. And yeah, I've a tendency to jump headfirst into things without thinking them through, but I'm not reckless enough to forcibly attract spirits floating around relatively peacefully by increasing the negative aura in my room through writing horror-farce. I may be in the non-sensitive side of the Uriarte Clan, but I ain't taking chances.

On the soft side, I came across a brief reference to Super Gals! earlier - natsukashii! I wanna watch it, not for the sake of watching Kotobuki Ran rule Shibuya singlehandedly, but just because I want to fall for, get hurt by, and fangirl over the Rei - Aya pairing. Sigh.

disclaimer

The late Prof. Maricon Alfiler once told our PA 11 class, "Read, Think, Write - or die intellectually." I have always tried to keep this little bit of advice close to heart, but I have to admit I'm not a very intelligent reader. Sure, I pick up puns and other side-references, but, and this is embarrassing to admit, I don't understand half the things I read. Often, I have to refer to SparkNotes; I just can't think in the right direction without 'Guide Questions'. Sometimes, even with hints pointing me to the right path, I still don't get the point.

Reading, however, still ranks high in my list of favorite hobbies. Just like writing. I may suck at it, but hey, it's fun. I love writing because it forces me to think 'creatively', to dream up of many potential answers to the question 'What happens next?'. Being a bit, er, whacked up, however, I tend to deviate too far from my original intention - and my story ends up scrambled.

For example: When I was in high school, and I fancied myself a future writer, I volunteered to write scripts for a couple of role plays. One of them was this thing for English class, a family drama/romance thing. I'm sure it wasn't that bad; it even got chosen over two other works to represent our class in the department-wide role play contest.

There I was, ecstatic that my work had been chosen, convinced that making the Gio's delinquent character confess to Jen's grade-conscious med student one over dinner with the rest of the dysfunctional family was the best idea I had ever come up with. We had to present our 'final revised role play' in front of the whole school, competing with the Seniors - we were Juniors then. The 'final outcome' turned out to be a bit complicated - my signature. After incorporating so many new characters into the play, and I think I even put in a homicide scene involving a sexy stepmother or something, my ending turned out to be an easy way out. I just turned everything into a dream; it turned out the protagonist had just dreamed up everything that had happened.

Personally, I don't think the story was that bad. It was a bit too complicated, yes, but a lot of telenovelas are complicated, noh? And about that dream ending, people didn't throw tantrums when the same thing happened in Lovers in Paris. I think the problem was that I squeezed in too much detail into a story that was meant to unfold in less than 30 minutes. That was the problem.

I didn't think much of it until one day, the directress/principal turned up in our classroom requesting to talk to the people who wrote and directed the play. Big surprise: I wrote and directed the whole production. My classmates didn't squeal though, so to compromise, the Head spoke to our whole class about how poorly she thought we had performed. I don't remember much of what she said, but her point was, she didn't like the play at all - I think the part where everything turns out to be a dream hit her pretty hard. And then she left.

I won't be so obnoxious as to attribute my never having pursued writing seriously because her words scarred me for life. Nooo, in fact, I still write, school reports and articles for the org newsletter, and I'm currently planning a supposedly simple fanfic in my head. I just wanted to share this story because it illustrates how complicated my output can be. Think of it as a warning; after all, I'm starting a blog.
